In this class we will focus on basic English speaking skills for school and work. We will study vocabulary and common words in the English language. You will be amazed at how much your English will improve in a few short months!

CATALINA MAGNET HIIGH SCHOOL COURSE SYLLABUS 2012-2013

5. Course description: ELD II Listening and Speaking 1, 2
Elective – ELD Two semester course, grade levels 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisites: None
For ELLs scoring at the AZELLA Basic level, this course provides a second year of practice in understanding and participating in simple conversations conducted in English in a variety of situations, especially involving classroom directions, student interaction, and computer use. The materials are aligned with Arizona’s Discrete Skills Inventory.
6. Textbooks: Listening Advantage 1 by Tom Kenny, World Link 1 by Heinle.
____Each student in this class is provided with his/her own textbook from Catalina’s Finance Office.
X    Students in this class work from a class set of books and are not provided with an individual copy, except by special request.
7. Other required materials: Students must bring the following materials (which will be provided in class) every day: a pen, pencil, binder with paper and a personal vocabulary dictionary binder.
8. Topics covered in this class: 1st quarter: review the alphabet, be able to write small words and understand vocabulary related to school and to the self, understand and practice short and long vowel sounds, identify and learn new vocabulary by using pictures, and creating magazine collages, participate in Rosetta Stone sessions to practice speaking and comprehension, use online resources to listen and practice short monologues and conversations, give short presentations in groups about a common topic using objects or pictures, create power point presentations to increase and practice vocabulary, create a personal dictionary to improve vocabulary, work on thematic units to improve vocabulary such as school, body parts, math and money, family.  2nd quarter: practice choral reading and pronunciation of key words, continue thematic practice of vocabulary words using online resources, continue using Rosetta Stone and personal dictionary to improve comprehension and vocabulary, understand basic rules of spelling, understand basic and simple sentence constructions, understand and use vocabulary related to jobs, careers, understand American holidays and traditions, begin reading basic stories and understand the main idea, review names of clothing and personal items, create a basic power point of the material learned so far and participate in a comprehensive review for the final exam. 3rd quarter: continue building vocabulary focusing on weather, health, science, continue using Rosetta stone and online resources to identify and practice key words and concepts, create presentations and power point to demonstrate new vocabulary and key concepts, understand and practice the present and past tense of basic verbs, practice spelling and basic vocabulary to build grammatically correct sentences, practice listening to guest speakers, be able to ask grammatically correct questions, practice basic punctuation.  4th quarter: role play common school situations so students are able to communicate with friends, a counselor, the librarian, American friends, teachers, coaches, etc. participate in a real-life situation, practice ordering food, asking for directions, continue basic grammar review and pronunciation of basic vocabulary, continue using Rosetta Stone and online sources to improve vocabulary and pronunciation,  write about a topic and record the reading to analyze and correct errors, participate in a comprehensive review for the final exam.
9. Grading policy: The regular grading scale will be used. Students will earn these grades based on points earned:
0-59=F 60-69=D  70-79=C  80-89=B  90-100=A   Plagiarism: Cheating is a serious issue. Students should plan to complete their OWN work or ask for help. If an assignment is plagiarized, it will not receive a grade. The student will need to submit a NEW assignment.
A Making The Grade report will be given to students every 10 days so that students can keep track of missing assignments.
10. Late/missing work policy: missing assignments may be turned in late, but INCOMPLETE assignments will not be graded. ALL assignments must be COMPLETED in order to receive credit. LATE WORK is due on the given due dates if a student wants the work to count for the next grading period. LATE work can be turned in at any time, but may not be graded by the next report card if the student misses the deadline. Extra credit: students will receive extra credit each time they attend a tutoring session of 20 minutes and document it on the tutoring handout.  Extra credit is meant to help a student’s grade; it is NOT going to help students skip assignments. Students may only receive up to 100 points of extra credit per/semester.
11. Interventions offered by teacher to students whose performance does not meet expectations: TUTORING is available by request during lunch and after school. Let me know before you come in so I can issue you a pass. ALL STUDENTS will re-take any quiz or test they fail. Students must come in at lunch or after school.  Any student may EMAIL or CALL me for assistance with class work or home work. I am here to help you succeed!

Passes: Each student will be able to use up to 5 passes per quarter. It is important to be in class, in order to learn the material.  Students who DO NOT use their passes, will receive 5 points for each unused pass. That’s up to 25 points of extra credit for staying in class!
